Good citizenship for young people
Even though younger Australians can’t vote yet, they still have the responsibility to be good citizens.
Being a good citizen in a democracy like we have in Australia means being an active member of your local community, taking an interest in public policy and the law, and making sure you take the chance to have your say.
There are five ways that I can think of that young people can participate in Australian democracy. Can you think of any others?
- Write a petition
- Find out who your local Member of Parliament is and email them
- Read the newspaper or watch the news
- Talk to parents and teachers about how current events might affect you and your community
- Play a leadership role at your school
